War on Terrorism vs. The Crusades

President George W. Bush had made a statement about comparing the war that the United States face with terrorism to the war that the Christians and Muslims faced 800 years ago called the Crusades. Well, we believe that Bush’s statement about the war on terrorism is completely wrong when comparing it to the Crusades. Bush’s statement is false because the war on terrorism has nothing to do with religious purposes. Eight hundred years ago, the Christians tried to take over Palestine because they believed that their religious leader Jesus Christ happened to be buried there. However, nobody in the U.S. wanted to take over Iraq or Afghanistan for any religious purposes. That is why we believe that Bush’s statement on the war on terrorism is false.

Distractions of ancient Rome

In ancient Rome, there were many distractions that the Roman government created so that Romans could not protest about the everyday problems in Rome. The number one distraction was the gladiator fights. The life of a gladiator was very difficult. They were either criminals that were imprisoned or slaves that were captured in wars. They had no choice to fight because if they did not fight, then they would be killed. Gladiator fights were tough. It was the last chance of a second chance in life. If you wanted to become a free man then you have to win every gladiator fight for three years. That was extremely tough because there was a gladiator fight every three days because of Roman holidays (another distraction). If you won your first gladiator fight then you weren't guaranteed to win the next one because you would probably be wounded from the previous battle

Helleenistic Culture

Hellenistic culture started when King Phillip II conquered ancient Greece. King Phillip had a lot of power in Greece. It seemed like he was untouchable. It was until then, when King Phillip was killed by one of his own bodyguards. There is no record of why the bodyguard killed him. After the death of King Phillip II, his son Alexander the Great took over and continued to follow his father’s dream of taking over the world. He did this by taking over countries like India, Egypt, and Persia. Alexander then united the three countries and it was known as Alexander’s Empire. And that is how Hellenistic culture started.

--Alexander still holds a title record for one of the rulers who had a lot of control of land!!!!!!!

Geography in Greece

Geography in Greece is not so good. All the mountains had made the country break up into city-states. Transportation is also difficult because of the mountains. Water is also salty in Greece. Greece also have no raw materials of their own so they have to trade with other countries. At least the weather is good in Greece. The lowest temperatures in Greece in the winter were about 60-70 degrees F.

Athens vs. Sparta

The Peloponnesian War or also known as Athens Vs. Sparta. This war started when the Delian League (Athens) tried to tax all the other city states. The Peloponnesian League (Sparta) grew upset and fraustrated as well as many other city-states in Greece. The war first started at 431 B.C. when Sparta declared war on Athens. The war lasted all the way up to 404 B.C. when Athens had surrendered. Athens surrendered because Sparta had trapped Athens inside their homes. They were not allowed to trade, leave out, or get rid of wastes. Athens became very dirty and new diseases had spread. Sparta had used a very good technique against Athens.

Golden Age in Greece

A golden age is a time of peace and prosperity in a country, or nation. A golden age normally ends with a devastating event that happens to the place. Pericles started the golden age in Greece. He had three major goals to make Athens a better place. His first goal was to strengthen Athens’ empire. His second goal was to strengthen democracy in Athens by paying government workers. His last goal was to glorify Athens. He did this by buying a lot of gold and marble. Many statues were built as well.

Question: Did Pericles ever get overthrown for wasting tons of money by making Athens “beautiful”?
